Who are we

We are a multi-sport Club, focusing on family and community. located at 50 Dunkirk Rd, Panmure, on Mt. Wellington War Memorial Reserve, next to Marist Rugby.
A beautiful location with great views of Tamaki River.

All playing surfaces (except Pickleball) are surfaced with artificial turf. We have 3 Tennis courts, 1 full size Futsal pitch, 4 Pop Tennis courts (the only ones in New Zealand!!), a Padel Court, a Pickleball court a Basketball area,  a multi-use leisure court.  All sport areas have  floodlights, but the Pop, Pickleball and Tennis court 4 lights (the "back: courts) are not yet connected to respond to an after-dusk booking. The "front" tennis courts are controlled by pay-as-you-go coin meters - $6.00 to start (hour) with $2,00 top-ups.

The decision to include a variety of other sports received considerable support from Auckland Council and the Maungakiekie Local Board. Riverside was first to intall Pop Tennis and Padel.

We are an Incorporated body. The club year is from 1st of October to 30th of September. AGM is late August or early September.

We now have a (Matchi.com) booking system where you can book a court.  https://www.matchi.se/facilities/riversidesports

Court booking confirmation includes a booking code, active for 30-mins before and after the booked time. That code is now your assigned code (save it) re-activated with subsequent bookings. If your booking has several persons, some arriving separately, we DO NOT permit the gate being propped open, while they straggle in, or while retrieving balls.  We recommend you communicate the booking code to your party so they can "punch" themselves in.

Members can receive a separate always-active code, but this MUST NOT be communicated or used by other (including any other family member) than the assigned member (unless is a Family membership).

Basketball

The Club has 3x basketball hoops – 2x (junior and senior heights) fixed to the court fence in the  Leisure Court, plus 1x portable practise hoop/backboard in the northern court area.

Pickleball

Riverside Tennis Club is excited to announce the installation of a pickleball court, offering members a fun and fast-paced alternative to traditional tennis. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played on a smaller court with a lower net, using a lightweight paddle and a perforated plastic ball.

Tennis

Riverside offers good-quality courts for all skill levels. Members can access coaching and training programs, from beginner lessons to intermediate. Social play and events, such as tournaments and casual matches, are also available. Joining a club is a great way to improve your game, stay active, and connect with other tennis enthusiasts.

POP Tennis

Pop Tennis is Padel without the court walls. A USA adaptation of Padel. See the website http://poptennis.com/. Riverside Sports introduced Pop Tennis back in 2017, but whilst huge in USA (but now being overtaken by Pickleball), has not caught-on in NZ, but is appreciated by those who try it. Same rackets as Padel, very similar balls (Tennis green-dot – a little slower), similar court size, net slightly lower than Padel. Singles or Doubles, under-arm serve, same scoring. However, like Tennis, you have to deal with the ball coming at you. Pop Tennis is a great starter sport for beginners of all ages - we often use Padel/Pop rackets in beginner Tennis coaching - an easy way for social players to switch-up, for competitive players to find new ways to win. The smaller court size adds a strong emphasis and advantage to net play and creates a fast and reaction-based game.

FutSAL

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced, 5-a-side variation of Association Football (soccer) that is widely played across the world. Futsal is the small-sided format that is officially recognized by FIFA. Futsal is played on a smaller pitch, using a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football. The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill (improvisation, creativity, technique, ball control, passing and moving in small spaces) and ability in situations of high pressure.Futsal is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for soccer competencies that can be translated into the soccer format of the game. Many of the best former and current soccer players in the world started in Futsal.

Padel

Padel is a racket sport that was invented in Mexico (1969).  Padel remained a niche sport for decades but its popularity soared since 2019 and is the fastest growing sport in the world.  Padel is in now in Australia and emerging in New Zealand. As of 2023, according to the International Padel Federation (FIP) there are more than 25 million active players in more than 90 countries.

Most commonly, Padel is played in doubles. The object of the game is to win 2 out of 3 sets to win the match. A set consists of 6 games and the scoring is the same as in tennis: 15, 30, 40, and “game”. Padel combines all the best elements of tennis, squash and badminton in a court that is 25% smaller (20 x 10 meters) than a regular tennis court. Padel is played in an enclosed court with wire mesh on the sides and glass walls around the back. There is a net in the middle. The balls are identical to tennis balls, but with a slight difference in pressure. The balls can bounce off the back and side walls, which can be utilised by players during the rallies, allowing for unexpected bounces and exciting rallies.

Padel Rackets are made from composite materials with a perforated surface to allow airflow. Because the racquet is much shorter than a tennis racket, it is much easier to control.Materials vary depending on quality but most rackets are made out of fibreglass or carbon. Generally played in doubles. The ball can be played off the walls. Scoring is the same as tennis. A serve must be done underarm.

Padel rackets and balls are available to borrow - located in the veranda Black Box.

VIDEOS: POP TENNIS, FUTSAL

Many web videos show Pop played as a Doubles game, but Pop is equally a Singles game -see the video above of a pro-level match.

The video below features USTA coach Vahe Assadourian (currently coaches USTA professional players Sam Querry and Steve Johnson) at Riverside Sports January 2019 where he ran a brief clinic to explain why he values Pop Tennis as a tool for teaching Tennis skills - at all levels.

The left video below is from Vahe's website, showing a 10yo prodigy junior volleying. The right video shows two juniors (look about 10yo) playing doubles with against adults.
