Padel is a racket sport that was invented in Mexico (1969). Padel remained a niche sport for decades but its popularity soared since 2019 and is the fastest growing sport in the world. Padel is in now in Australia and emerging in New Zealand. As of 2023, according to the International Padel Federation (FIP) there are more than 25 million active players in more than 90 countries.
Most commonly, Padel is played in doubles. The object of the game is to win 2 out of 3 sets to win the match. A set consists of 6 games and the scoring is the same as in tennis: 15, 30, 40, and “game”. Padel combines all the best elements of tennis, squash and badminton in a court that is 25% smaller (20 x 10 meters) than a regular tennis court. Padel is played in an enclosed court with wire mesh on the sides and glass walls around the back. There is a net in the middle. The balls are identical to tennis balls, but with a slight difference in pressure. The balls can bounce off the back and side walls, which can be utilised by players during the rallies, allowing for unexpected bounces and exciting rallies.
Padel Rackets are made from composite materials with a perforated surface to allow airflow. Because the racquet is much shorter than a tennis racket, it is much easier to control.Materials vary depending on quality but most rackets are made out of fibreglass or carbon. Generally played in doubles. The ball can be played off the walls. Scoring is the same as tennis. A serve must be done underarm.
Padel rackets and balls are available to borrow - located in the veranda Black Box.
